Grammar School Curriculum

Faith Christian School's mission is to educate students within the framework of Christian belief. We want the children to grow up reading and writing well, while learning to think as Christians. Our classrooms will be filled with wonderful literature to read and real science materials to explore.

Our lessons
are rigorous and engaging, designed with intentional purpose and meaning.

We believe that children learn best when they see, hear, and do as they learn.

Our curriculum is academically challenging and leads children to an understanding of the world as a Christian. Each discipline is taught from a perspective which encourages the children to stand in awe of God and His wonderful creation. Everything we study is presented with order and beauty, made appropriate and meaningful for young learners. Long term memory is the goal for the curriculum selection and design.

  • Bible
    • Our Bible curriculum is from Christian Schools International. We focus on God's providential work through history. Students have a Bible lesson each day and apply Bible truths in every subject.
    • The students study and memorize questions and answers from the Westminster Catechism. Children in grades K-2 memorize questions from the Children’s catechism.  Children in grades 3-5 memorize questions and answers from Westminster shorter Catechism.
  • Reading and Writing
    • The Spalding Phonics Program, an explicit phonics program, introduces students to the the 70 phonograms and the 29 spelling rules in the English language. Students in grades K-5 learn and review these rules and apply them to spelling words each week.  Each year students create a new spelling log to record new and challenging words.
    • The Shurley Grammar Program  presents the rules of  English grammar and writing in jingles and sequential instruction.
    • Excellence in Writing and Imitations in Writing offer lessons in developing excellent writing skills.
    • Wordly Wise offers understanding of new vocabulary words.  Workbook exercises guarantee students exposure to new words and mastery of their meaning.
    • McCall-Crabbs Standard Test Lessons in Reading offers a way to increase comprehension skills through short reading selections followed by comprehension questions which direct the student back to the reading selection. Students read timed lessons and answer comprehension  questions  in order to increase their skills in comprehension
    • Making Connections is a program which offers direct instruction in the mechanics of reading comprehension.  Students cover such topics as main idea, characterization, and sequencing while reading and apply these skills to their study of literature.
    • Individual Literature Books  are the basis of our literature selection for children.  Teachers have selected quality books and classics from which to teach.  Children read these books from a classroom collection.  Reading class involves reading aloud by children, reading silently, and some reading with partners.  Students respond to their reading in individual reflections, questions, and summary reports.
  • Mathematics
    • Saxon Mathematics offers a strong math program for our K-5 students. This program is systematic, advanced, and focuses on the student’s mastery of basic computation as mental computation and problem solving.  Students cover the designated material in one year.
  • History
    • Abeka History offers our K-1 children an elementary understanding of American History. Students enjoy learning about people and events of American History.
    • In grades 2-5 students study world history through the Veritas History Program. Students come to understand God’s providential care of the world and events which have shaped our world and who we are.
    • Historical fiction is enjoyed as students integrate the disciplines of history and literature.
  • Geography
    • Students study maps, countries, and land forms through the Steck-Vaughn Maps, Graphs, and Globes.
  • Science
    • Science studies are accomplished through several curriculum sources.  Students enjoy learning from hands-on lessons prepared by the teachers.  Teachers use AIMS Science Materials, Logical Learning Materials, Christian Schools International Texts and other materials which teach the content described in the course descriptions.
  • Arts: Music, Art, Drama
    • Specialists assist teachers in the planning and implementation of the arts programs. We have an art teacher and chorus teacher who meet with students weekly.  Frequent art shows and choral concerts encourage the students to grow in the area of performance.
  • Languages: Spanish, Latin
    • We offer Spanish in grades K-2 and Latin in grades 3-5. Students meet with these teachers twice a week.
  • Physical Education
    • Physical education is offered to K-5 students each week. Children in grades K-2 have PE twice a week, while grades 3-5 have class once a week for an hour.
    • All children have an outside recess daily, weather permitting.

    Homework
We encourage students to practice at home each night. Homework is consistent, but minimal.

    Worship in Chapel
We will celebrate our faith together with chapel once a week, singing hymns, learning lessons of faith together, hearing about faithful heroes of the past, and praying together as a school.
